In December of 2011, International Day of the Girl was born. Young girls around the world have historically been in vulnerable positions based on their gender and age. The goals of International Day of the Girl are to highlight the challenges that girls face, address the needs they have, as well as advocate for their empowerment and the attainment of their fundamental human rights. This year’s theme, GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable aims to celebrate all the accomplishments by girls and for girls, since the groundbreaking Fourth World Conference on Women: Action for Equality, Development and Peace in Beijing, China where the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was adopted.
Global Rights for Women (GRW) derives its inspiration from commitments like this, from around the world, to empower women and girls and work to implement laws and policies that ensure their right to live in a world free of violence. Global Rights for Women was invited by UN Women to provide expertise and prepare a compelling background paper which reviewed the progress of the 56 member States of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe on preventing and eliminating violence against women and girls thus far. More on this work can be found here.
Already in 2019, GRW has carried out trainings alongside our partner organizations in Morocco, Moldova, and Georgia to equip police, advocates, and criminal justice system actors with the tools to better respond to violence against women and girls in their communities.
This year’s International Day of the Girl is more important than ever, as we approach the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action- A year to celebrate the progress made in women and girl’s equality, and to also recognize the work that is still needed so that girls around the world can reach their full potential. Today, Global Rights for Women is thankful for our international partners and incredible human rights leaders who are committed to girls not only growing up in a world of equality, but in a world that is free from violence.
