Selenium absorption is not regulated, and 50­100% of dietary selenium is absorbed (34). There are two major selenium compartments in the body: the unregulated selenomethionine compartment that changes in proportion to selenium intake, and the well-regulated selenocysteine-inorganic selenium compartment that consists of the biochemically active pool of selenium in the body. Selenocysteine-containing proteins, with the exception of selenoprotein P, are thought to have enzymatic activity in which the selenocysteine residue is located at the catalytic site (29). Mammalian selenoproteins contain selenocysteine, which is synthesized and incorporated into selenoproteins via a complex pathway that is still incompletely understood in animals.
